It is common knowledge in my family that I am a Disney World
addict.
Prior to returning to the farm I grew up on in
Washington State, we spent 15 years in
Alaska. While I am first to admit that the Last Frontier offers some of the
most beautiful scenery on earth, the winters do get long. To combat "cabin
fever" Alaskans take full advantage of frequent flyer miles and are quick to
travel to the "lower 48" without much coaxing.
Our personal pattern of travel from Alaska went something like this....visit
family in Washington, go to Disney World; visit family in Missouri, go to
Walt Disney
World (WDW); visit family in Idaho, go to Disney World; visit friends in
Texas, go to Disney World; go on an Eastern Caribbean cruise, go to Disney
World; go on a Western Caribbean cruise, go to Disney World....So you get the
idea.
Our first visit was when our daughter was 10. I was pretty concerned things
would not go well as she was terrified of the little dragon coaster at the
Alaska State Fair. So I did my research and found a specific procedure to
acclimate a first time theme parker to progressively bigger and bigger rides. It
was then I knew Mickey and I would form a permanent bond. You see I am obsessive
compulsive when it comes to travel, work and planning vacations. Disney World
was a perfect match as I believe it is best experienced with a well laid plan.
It is the happiest place on earth but is not the type of place to get about
randomly.
Most WDW travel guides will say the same thing - planning is everything. I am
quite sure that a lack of planning is why many people say going to Disney World
was the worst experience of their lives. It was hot, expensive and too crowded
to have fun. So while it seems contrary to a family vacation, there is just too
much to see without a good plan. I will be writing a series of newsletters that
will offer my personal advice, from my personal experience. Of course it is up
to you to follow or not....
